Swipe to merge tiles — 2048 style.

There is one strategy that reliably reaches the 2048 tile, and it is simpler than it looks: keep your largest tile locked in a corner and never move it. Everything else is about protecting that corner.

Here is the corner method step by step. Practice it in Number Merge, our swipe-to-merge take on 2048.

Pick a corner and never leave it

Choose one corner — bottom-left is a common pick — and commit to building your biggest tile there. Every decision from here protects that corner tile. The moment your largest number drifts into the middle of the board, you lose control and gridlock follows.

Use only three directions

If your corner is bottom-left, only ever swipe down and left, plus right when you must. Never swipe up — an up-swipe pulls your biggest tile off the bottom edge and wrecks the structure. Sticking to three directions keeps everything anchored.

Build an ordered chain (the snake)

Along your anchored bottom row, arrange tiles in descending order — biggest in the corner, then the next biggest beside it, and so on. This “snake” means your tiles merge in sequence: when the corner tile finally doubles, the whole row shuffles up cleanly instead of jamming.

Don’t chase small merges

It is tempting to combine small tiles wherever you can, but random merges in the open board break your ordering. Keep the bottom row as your workbench and let small tiles accumulate on the top rows until they can merge into the chain. Patience beats greed.

Plan two moves ahead when it fills up

Late in a game the board gets crowded and one careless swipe can be fatal. Before each move, picture where every tile slides and whether it keeps your corner intact. If a move would force your big tile out of the corner, find another. Slowing down here is what turns a good run into a 2048.

Frequently asked

What is the best strategy for 2048?
Keep your highest tile pinned in one corner and build the rest of that row in descending order. Swipe in only three directions so the corner tile never moves. This “corner method” is the most reliable way to reach 2048.
Why should I not swipe up in 2048?
If your biggest tile is anchored in a bottom corner, swiping up drags it off the edge and into the board, destroying your structure. Stick to down, left and (when needed) right to keep the corner locked.
Is it possible to always win 2048?
No — new tiles spawn semi-randomly, so a bad sequence can still end a game. But the corner-and-chain method dramatically raises how often you reach 2048 and lets skilled players push far beyond it.
What is the highest tile in 2048?
The named goal is the 2048 tile, but the board does not stop there — with disciplined corner play you can reach 4096, 8192 and higher until the board finally fills.
